💻 System Requirements

Word Desktop (Windows)

  • OS: Windows 10 or later
  • Word: Word 2016 or later (Microsoft 365 recommended)
  • Internet: Required for AI service connections
  • .NET: Framework 4.5+ (usually pre-installed)

Word Online

  • Browser: Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari (latest)
  • Account: Microsoft account required
  • Internet: Required

RECOMMENDED

Method 1: Using the Installer

1 Download the Installation Package

  • Download RePhrase-for-Word-Setup.zip
  • Save to your Downloads folder
  • Extract the ZIP file: Right-click → "Extract All..."

📦 Inside the ZIP archive you'll find:

  • RePhrase-for-Word-Setup.msi – Windows installer
  • RePhrase-for-Word-manifest.xml – Add-in manifest file

2 Run the Installer

  • Double-click RePhrase-for-Word-Setup.msi
  • If Windows SmartScreen appears: click "More info" → "Run anyway"

3 Complete Installation

  • Follow the installation wizard
  • Click "Next" → "Finish"

4 Launch Word

  • Open Microsoft Word (or restart if already open)
  • Look for RePhrase button in the ribbon

5 Open RePhrase

  • Click the RePhrase button
  • Panel opens on the right side

Method 2: Manual Installation

For advanced users who prefer manual registry editing

⚠️ Warning

Be careful when editing the Windows Registry. Incorrect changes can affect system stability.

  1. Extract RePhrase-for-Word-Setup.zip
  2. Locate RePhrase-for-Word-manifest.xml inside the extracted folder
  3. Move it to a permanent location (e.g., C:\Users\YourName\Documents\RePhrase\)
    ⚠️ Don't delete or move this file after installation - Word needs it!
  4. Press Win + R, type regedit, press Enter
  5. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\WEF\Developer
  6. Add String Value:
    • Name: RePhrase.Manifest
    • Value: Full path to your manifest (e.g., C:\Users\YourName\Documents\RePhrase\RePhrase-for-Word-manifest.xml)
  7. Restart Word

📦 Before You Start

Extract RePhrase-for-Word-Setup.zip and locate the RePhrase-for-Word-manifest.xml file. You'll need this for the upload step.

1 Open Word Online

2 Access Add-ins Menu

  • Click Add-ins button in the ribbon (puzzle piece icon)
  • Select More Add-ins from dropdown

3 Go to MY ADD-INS Tab

  • In the "Office Add-ins" dialog, click MY ADD-INS tab
  • (Next to the STORE tab)

4 Upload My Add-in

  • Top-right corner: click Upload My Add-in link

5 Browse for Manifest

  • Click Browse... button
  • Navigate to your extracted ZIP folder
  • Select RePhrase-for-Word-manifest.xml
  • Click Open

6 Upload Manifest

  • Verify filename appears in the text field
  • Click Upload button
  • Wait for confirmation

7 Verify Installation

  • RePhrase for Word should now appear in MY ADD-INS
  • Dialog closes automatically

8 Open RePhrase

  • Click Add-ins button again
  • Select RePhrase for Word
  • Panel opens on the right

💡 Good to Know

  • The add-in is installed per-account, not per-document
  • Available in all your Word Online documents
  • Works in any browser

⚙️ First-Time Setup

After installation, configure at least one AI connection to start using RePhrase:

1 Open Settings

Click the ⚙️ Settings icon (top-right corner)

2 Add Connection

  • Go to Connections tab
  • Click ➕ Add Connection

3 Configure Provider

Fill in the connection details:

  • Select Provider: OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, etc.
  • Name: E.g., "My OpenAI"
  • API Key: From provider's dashboard
  • Model: Choose AI model

Get API Keys:

Click 💾 Save Connection

4 Set as Active

Click ✓ Active to use this connection

5 Test (Optional)

Click 🧪 Test Connection to verify setup

6 Start Using

  • Select text in Word
  • Type a prompt or choose template
  • Click Send (or Ctrl+Enter)

🔧 Troubleshooting

Desktop Issues

❌ RePhrase doesn't appear in ribbon

  • Restart Word completely (close all windows)
  • Check: File → Options → Add-ins → Manage COM Add-ins
  • Run installer as Administrator
  • Check antivirus isn't blocking

❌ "Add-in is not loaded" error

  • Verify manifest.xml location
  • Check registry path is correct
  • Ensure Word has internet access

Online Issues

❌ "Upload My Add-in" link not visible

  • Make sure you're on MY ADD-INS tab (not STORE)
  • Refresh page and try again
  • Check account has sideloading permissions

❌ Upload fails

  • Verify manifest.xml is valid
  • Try different browser (Chrome/Edge recommended)
  • Clear browser cache

General Issues

❌ Panel is blank or won't load

  • Check internet connection
  • Disable browser extensions
  • Clear cache and cookies
  • Check firewall isn't blocking hartnett.live

❌ API calls fail

  • Verify API key is correct
  • Check account has remaining credits
  • Try different model or provider
